DO NOT USE AGAIN Paul McCartney in Liverpool12

Sir Paul McCartney spoke fondly about Liverpool to lucky audience members as he reminisced about his home city whilst playing a fantastic record-breaking gig at the O2 Academy.

His concert, billed as the fastest sell-out gig in Liverpool music history (four minutes), treated 1,200 privileged fans to almost 30 songs during the hour-and-a-half-long show, including classic Beatles tracks such as 'And I Love Her', 'Hey Jude', 'Get Back' and 'Eleanor Rigby'.

Macca took fans back in time at the gig, which kicked off

with 'Honey Hush'. Poignant speeches about his fellow

Beatles bandmates, George Harrison and John Lennon,

introduced tribute versions of 'Something' on ukulele, and

the sing-along anthem 'Give Peace a Chance'.

He gave the audience an insight to the early life of The

Beatles, and urged an archaeological mission to dig up

the original Cavern club in Mathew Street. He asked: “If they

can excavate the pyramids then why not the Cavern?”

Sir Paul also joked: "I'll be playing Bootle Town Hall

tomorrow," in a reference to a Beatles performance there

The O2 gig was an intimate affair, taking him back to the

days when he played pub and club venues across the city.

As well as Beatles numbers, he performed rock n'roll

standards, solo hits, and a healthy selection of Wings

songs, especially from the newly-reissued 'Band on the

Run' album, such as 'Jet', 'Let  Me Roll It' and 'Nineteen

Hundred and Eighty Five'.

The evening came to a show-stopping finale where he performed a haunting rendition of the acclaimed Beatles hit 'Yesterday', before picking up momentum for Sergeant Pepper’s reprise, and climaxing with guitar solos from The End on Abbey Road.

As if that wasn't enough, the star-struck fans were treated to free chips and tea or coffee before they headed out into the freezing Liverpool night.
